What is a Fabric Shaver?

A fabric shaver is a small electronic device that uses a spinning blade to remove lint and pills from fabric. They are designed to be gentle on the fabric and can be used on all types of materials including wool, cashmere, merino and synthetics. When maintained properly and used correctly fabric shavers should not damage the fabric in any way.

Essentially, a fabric shaver can be considered as an electric razor for clothes - instead of cutting of hair, it removes bobbles and fuzz from clothes. Typically, fabric shavers are used on jumpers, sweatshirts, but they can also be used on sofas, curtains and other upholstery.

How do Fabric Shavers Work?

Fabric shavers are ordinarily made of four basic parts:

  1. The body, which houses the electric motor (and sometimes the batteries)
  2. The head, which contains the blades that cut the pills from the fabric
  3. The blade cover
  4. The lint catcher. In most shavers, there’s a small plastic “well” that collects the pills for removal

When in use the device’s fine blades slice off the fabric pills and exposed lint while the blade cover prevents the blades from making contact with the garment itself, preventing any damage. Importantly, the blade cover is also an important safety device that stops the user from cutting themselves.

The cut-off pills then gather in the lint catcher which can be emptied when it gets full.

Features to look out for on a Fabric Shaver

When looking for a fabric shaver there are a few additional features over and above the basic pill removing that can really make your life easier:

  • Spare blades: If you’re going to be a heavy user of your fabric shaver, consider getting a device with spare blades. The blades will blunt over time, so having replacement blades will certainly elongate the life of your shaver.
  • Storage: Again, if you’re going to use your shaver a lot on large surface areas consider getting a device with a good size lint catcher. This will certainly save time in the long run.
  • A comfortable handle: Finding a device that sits comfortably in your hand is a must. While fabrics shavers aren’t generally the most expensive device, ensuring it’s comfortable to use is super important.

Power Source

Fabric shavers come in three main varieties; battery-powered, rechargeable, normally via a USB cable and AC power.

The AC versions have the benefit of constant power but aren’t very portable and there is the obvious limitation of reach of the cable itself.

The battery-powered versions have the advantage of being portable, but you obviously need to remember to change the batteries or at least have some batteries on hand should they run out of charge midway through a job.

The rechargeable option offers a relatively good middle ground, but always remember to charge the device after using it so you don’t have the annoyance of it running out of power half way through debobbling a jumper. Most USB rechargeable devices can be used for around an hour before losing charge.

And finally...

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fabric shaver damage my clothes?

If used correctly, you shouldn’t damage your clothes. But, for more delicate fabrics such as wool or cashmere be careful not to get too vigorous with how you run the shaver over the surface of your garment as they can snag and pull the threads.

One of the best ways to make sure a fabric shaver is suitable for a particular item is to try it on a small section of the garment first.

Can a fabric shaver be used on all fabric types?

Yes, a fabric shaver can be used on all fabric types that might pill or bobble. They are also safe to use on upholstery, curtains and carpets.

Fabric Shavers have sharp blades. Can I hurt myself?

A fabric shaver is designed with safety in mind and whilst they do have sharp blades, the blades are positioned behind a safety cover. As a result, and providing you use the shaver according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you certainly shouldn’t hurt yourself.
