With over 15,000 reviews and a 4-star rating on Amazon, the Gleener lint scraper and Lint Remover is one of the most popular devices on the market.

This manual lint scraper, which doesn’t require batteries or re-charging has 3 interchangeable edges which cater for different fabric types including cashmere, wool, cotton, fleece, acrylic, rayon and polyester.

  • The flexibility of having the 3 interchangeable blades
  • Power free so is super portable
  • Comes in 6 different colours

What we don’t like:

  • You need to go over fabrics with a lot of lint multiple times

  • Comfort of wooden handle
  • Very easy to use on multiple fabrics, including sofas

What is Lint?

Lint is the common term used to describe small accumulations of fabric that appear on the surface of clothes, fabrics and upholstery.  More often than not, these small lints or bobbles appear during the course of normal wear and are common on most fabrics including cotton, wool and synthetic fabrics. We have a detailed guide on what is lint and how to prevent it from happening if you're interested in finding out more.

What is a Lint Scraper?

There are two main types of lint scraper: electric and manual.

An electric lint scraper is a small electronic device that uses a rotating blade to remove lint and bobbles from fabric. Electric line shavers are mostly used on clothing, typically sweaters, sweatshirts, and other clothing made from wool, cashmere or angora.

Think of an electric lint scraper as an electric razor for your clothes except instead of cutting off hair, it removes fuzz, lint, loose threads and pilling from cloth. They can be used on almost any knit fabric including cashmere, angora and merino wool.

There are a number of manual ways to shave lint from fabrics, but one of the most recognisable is a small manual device which normally has a small wooden handle with sharp blades on a metal frame. The blades remove lint when firmly rubbed over a garment.

You can also use a lint roller which is a manual device that has a sticky roller which pulls off lint from garments when rubbed over the fabric.

Do Lint Scrapers Work?

Yes, they definitely work and do a great job of rejuvenating clothes! However, and as good as a job as they can do, worn clothes will always be worn clothes - don’t be put off though as you can definitely elongate the life of your favourite jumper with a relatively cheap device.

Lint Scrapers vs. Lint Rollers

The main benefit to using a lint scraper over a lint roller is that lint scrapers are simply more effective at removing pills, fuzz and lint from your clothing. Because lint rollers rely only on adhesive and manual pressure, they won’t remove a lot of the pills and fuzz that are still somewhat connected to the fabric.

Using a lint roller also runs the risk of pulling up even more fibers and lint from the fabric, making further pilling in the future more likely. Rollers can even be too sticky, resulting in damage to particularly delicate fabrics.

lint scrapers, on the other hand, actually cut the fuzz and pilling from the fabric, leaving a much cleaner, fresher-looking sweater.

Lint rollers are a cheap alternative to a lint scraper you can use in a pinch, but we don’t recommend choosing to use a lint roller over a lint scraper. lint scrapers offer several advantages over lint rollers.
